Black people are so miserable
Why are African Americans particularly hit hard by the virus? Surgeon General Jerome Adams has said that many ethnic minority communities are at higher risk because they are more likely to have pre-existing health problems, or are in lower income jobs where working from home is not an option.

She added that actor Idris Elba, who she interviewed for her Oprah Talks Covid-19 series, had tested positive for the virus, but shown no symptoms. "It's all these people, who perhaps could be carriers," she said.

It was important for "black people to understand pre-existing conditions" like diabetes and asthma put them at greater risk of the virus, she added. Winfrey, who suffered from pneumonia last year, said she was also taking additional precautions because of her condition - and because many people could be asymptomatic carriers.

Why are African Americans hit so hard by virus? "When this was happening in Wuhan, we thought it was 'over there'… and then I talked to African Americans in Milwaukee, and folks were saying 'we heard about it in Washington, but Washington is way over there, we didn't think it had anything to do with us'," she told CBS news.

Government data suggests that 33% of those in the US hospitalised for coronavirus are black - even though African Americans only make up 13% of the US population. In Chicago, nearly 70% of those who died from coronavirus were African American - while only 23% of the population was black. Winfrey said that initial messages around coronavirus "did not connect to the [US] audience in a way they could hear".

American broadcaster Oprah Winfrey has warned African Americans to take the coronavirus outbreak seriously, saying the disease is "taking people out". The virus was hitting the black community hard, and "people aren't getting the message" about the risk of asymptomatic carriers, she said. African Americans make up a disproportionate number of coronavirus deaths and hospitalisations in the US. The US is the epicentre of the pandemic with 592,743 cases and 25,239 deaths.

Severity level: Serious The CDC reported that an individual partially entered a room multiple times without the required respiratory protection while other people in that room were performing procedures with a non-human primate on a necropsy table. “This deviation from entity procedures resulted in a respiratory occupational exposure to select agent aerosols,” the CDC wrote.

Several of the laboratory violations the CDC noted in 2019 concerned "non-human primates" infected with a "select agent", the identity of which is unknown — it was redacted in all received documents, because disclosing the identity and location of the agent would endanger public health or safety, the agency says. In addition to Ebola, the lab works with other deadly agents like anthrax and smallpox.

The European Union has failed to agree on a new rescue plan for the stricken economies after an overnight meeting of EU finance ministers. Spain warned that the future of the EU was at stake. Progress was hampered by a stand-off between the southern European countries hit hard by the outbreak, led by Italy, and the Nordic countries, led by the Netherlands, which are fiscally conservative. The European Central Bank has warned that as much as 1.5 trillion euros (a $2.6 trillion) of fiscal measures may be needed this year as EU ministers squabble over an increase in economic aid, coping with the cliff-like economic downturn caused by the new crown disease.

The death toll from Spain's new crown reached 14,500 in a single day, with 757 deaths in the past 24 hours, up from 743 the day before. Spain's death toll now stands at 14,555, the second highest in the world after Italy. However, Health Minister El Salvador said the figure was still in line with the overall slowdown in deaths. The percentage of new cases per day has roughly halved to about 5 per cent since the end of March. The total number of confirmed cases in Spain has risen from 140,510 in Tuesday to 146,690.

Some of the areas with the highest death tolls include Detroit, New Orleans and the New York Metropolitan area. The mayor says the death toll in New York's black and Hispanic communities is disproportionately high, and the city has begun providing community assistance to those residents. Preliminary figures show that blacks account for 28 percent of New York City's new crown deaths, although blacks make up only 22 percent of the city's population; Hispanics account for 34 percent of all new crown deaths in the city, spanish communities account for 29 percent of the city's population.

New Coronaviruses killed 938 people in the UK yesterday, the highest number in a single day, bringing the total to 7,097. More than 5,000 new cases were confirmed yesterday, but the number of confirmed cases and hospitalizations has started to level off, said Stephen, medical director of the National Health Service. Johnson, the prime minister, is in intensive care. New York City's mayor says the true number of deaths in New York City is even higher than official figures because they do not include people who die at home untested for the virus. About 13,000 people died and about 400,000 were diagnosed with the new coronavirus.

'Death By Racism': Part of America's DNA From the Start?
You don't need to hear the racial statistics on COVID-19 to know that black people have been affected disproportionately -- the same is true of eight of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States. Even before the pandemic, black life expectancy was 3½ years shorter than white. Many blacks are redlined into densely packed, crime-ridden urban areas. Stuck in underfinanced, substandard schools. Subjected to silent environmental catastrophes, like lead hidden in pipes and on walls.

State officials were also reporting that the state’s black population was only 26% more likely than whites to die from a coronavirus infection when in fact their likelihood of death is 2.5 times as high. The death rate for Hispanics is now calculated at 67% higher than non-Hispanic whites.

What Others say

The Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The neighbouring countries are Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast. Australia is the only country that is also a continent. The Australian mainland has been inhabited for more than 42,000 years by indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and then European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was later claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, commencing on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The population is just over 21.3 million, with approximately 60% of the population concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.
Wikipedia

Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990s, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980s. Long-term concerns include climate-change issues such as the depletion of the ozone layer and more frequent droughts, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.
